About Shantaa

About Koh Kood

Koh Kood is an isolated and still naturally preserved island, located in Trad province, on the east coast of Thailand. Koh Kood is the easternmost island and it is far away from the mainland and it is hardly a city or even a town. Koh Kood consists of several small local villages scattered around the island. Local people still live the same life as they were decades ago.

Now Koh Kood becomes more well-known internationally. However, Koh Kood is still a nice place that will remind you of old Phuket or old Samui, more than 30-40 years ago.

The infrastructures on the island are still not as ready as what you can expect from any famous tourist place. Koh Kood has 24 hrs electricity but at times, it might not be enough for whole the island. And the freshwater can be scarce during the high time. There is no real nightlife, no entertainment complex, and no chain convenience store. There are schools, a police station, a district office, and a hospital. If you would like to use cash while you are on the island, please have your cash ready before you reach the pier in Trad. Koh Kood has a few ATMs but they don’t always work properly.

Since this is an isolated island and there are not too many visitors around, many beaches on Koh Kood are still clean and the water is still blue and clear. During the weekdays and the low season, you virtually have the whole beach to yourself. This is something you won’t be able to find in any tourist destinations. And also, Koh Kood is safe and convenient to travel to.

We clean our beaches every day. But the garbage keeps coming. You might see some garbage washed ashore during the day. They were from the open sea. Amazingly, some plastic bottles that we found were from Indonesia or Vietnam!

About Shantaa

Shantaa is located on Aao Ta Pao (Ta Pao Beach), Koh Kood. Now Shantaa has only 25 rooms in its vast area. There is enough space for all guests. If you would like to get away from the crowd or just simply escape from your routine city life, Koh Kood and Shantaa should be on the top of your list.

We have a beautiful marble swimming pool on the north side and we have a beautiful ocean for a pool on the south side.

Most of our staff are local islanders. Before they became a part of Shantaa, English was never a part of their daily lives. With some English training, they are able to understand basic English now. If you could speak slowly, they would be able to understand correctly.

We are not hoteliers. We might not know fancy hotel traditions or fancy hotel jargon but we know how to make your stay pleasant. We service by heart with only one goal, "to make your stay as easy and pleasant as we could".

If you need anything to make your stay more pleasant, please do not hesitate to let us know.

Just make yourself at home and leave the work to us.

As mentioned earlier that we are on an isolated island, everything is imported from Trad, Bangkok, or even from other parts of Thailand. That is why prices of everything on Koh Kood, not just at Shantaa, are a bit high but our prices are not as high as in any other famous tourist spots. To keep your cost down, we are trying not to be too fancy but we sure have all the basic things you need to make your vacation comfortable and memorable.

Beaches at Shantaa

Shantaa has a large property area. We have 2 beaches (north and south), a private canal, and a small hill. The south beach is just about 200 meters walk from the furthest villa. At the south edge of Shantaa, there is a community pier.

The south beach

The south beach is a small beach next to the pier. It is partly sandy and rocky. The rocky part is great for snorkeling. Just over to the other side of the pier, there is a vast stretch of a perfect coconut-fringed beach with crystal clear water, especially on a bright sunny day. This stretch is a public beach. You can walk on this part of the beach as far as you like or lie there anywhere you please.

At our south beach, we have a beach bar, ‘Shantaa Bar-BaRa’, where you can order drinks and snacks. Kayaks, paddle boards, sun beds, and beach towels are available here.

The north beach

The north beach is at the north edge of Shantaa. This beach may not be ideal for swimming. But it is very quiet and away from the outside crowd. It is a great spot for snorkeling, sunbathing, reading, and relaxing. With our private canal on the side, it is also a great spot for practicing kayaks and paddle boards. The beautiful marble swimming pool is on the north side too. The sunset here is also very beautiful. Sun beds and beach towels are available.

Shantaa Gathi Café is located on side of the canal. It is a small bar where you can order drinks, snacks, and food. The Gathi Café is gaining more popularity among visitors. Outside guests like to visit us here too.

The pier next to Shantaa

In the past, there was no road here on Koh Kood. People of the west side had to walk through the thick wood to the east side to find a boat to the mainland. Walking took a whole day. Very sick people had no chance to survive.

Building a road connecting the west to the east was very costly. So a pier on the west side of Koh Kood had to be built. But there was no one was willing to donate the land to build a pier.

In 1995, our grandpa, as the community leader at that time, allowed the authority to build the pier on his only beach section for the benefit of all people. About 10 years later, Shantaa was born. This is why Shantaa is right next to this pier. The pier wasn’t built to be pretty for tourists. It was built to serve the needs of the people back then. To some people, this seems like a negative point for Shantaa but we are proud of our grandpa's decision.

Nowadays, this pier still services the community very well. It is still able to take passenger boats, freight boats, and some fishing boats. Several boats could be coming in and out of this pier daily. There might be some noise, crowd, and trucks when boats arrive or leave.

And now, it has a new function, a recreational park. Rather than being busy with boat business, the pier is busy with local people as well as visitors who come to fish, to exercise, or just to watch the sunset. Sunset is very beautiful looking from this pier.

Some of our guests do enjoy lying down at our south beach watching lives on the pier.

However, if you think the south beach is too busy for you, please try our north beach.
